Winter is often that time of year when runners reflect back on their racing year and then create new goals for the next season. When creating goals it’s comforting to set easy attainable goals rather than to strive for your ultimate potential while risking failure and feelings of foolishness.
In one of his many books, Leo Buscaglia once wrote “To place your goals and dreams before your friends is to risk loss, to love is to risk not being loved in return. To live is to risk dying, to hope is to risk despair, to try is to risk failure. But all prudent risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing. The person who risks nothing also does nothing, has nothing, is nothing. If we avoid risk, we may avoid suffering and sorrow, but we simply cannot learn, feel, change, grow, love or live.”
If, because of our fears, we fail to challenge ourselves, we also fail to approach our true limits. A person who challenges his or her limits, will learn and grow. This is the path to flourishing.
Focus on the benefits of the risk instead of worrying about what might go wrong. Daily visualize and truly feel what achieving your goals will feel like. If you do these things, it will be much easier for you to take the risks that you need to grow in your fitness and athleticism and to become the best person you can be.
