Jessica Maisel, owner of Green SourceMissoula, makes these amazing green smoothies. Not sure? Come to the Runners Edge this Saturday, January 10th between 10am-12pm to sample some of these delicious concoctions.
Everyone can use more leafy greens and fresh fruit in their diet. Green smoothies are a sure-fire way to incorporate an abundance of both! Endurance athletes have much to gain from increasing consumption of leafy greens. Extended endurance activities tax the body – focusing on recovery is critical. Oxidative stress on the cellular level can cause muscle soreness, inflammation and fatigue. We must assist our bodies to recover properly after exertion to both avoid injury and get back out there – whether it may be running, skiing, hiking, biking, etc. This is where green smoothies are of immense value.
Greens are needed for optimal recovery and general health as they are loaded with essential nutrients: amino acids (building blocks of protein), omega 3 fatty acids, chlorophyll, fiber, vitamins A, C, K, minerals and electrolytes (calcium, iron, magnesium, selenium, potassium, sodium, and zinc). Incorporating a significant quantity and variety of fresh, organic greens in our diets is a challenge. Maintaining a revolving variety of greens to avoid excessive alkaloid consumption is even more challenging. Blending leafy greens and fruit together makes for a wonderfully delicious and nutritionally fulfilling treat!… not to be associated in either taste or value to varieties found on the local grocery store shelf. Blending the whole leaves and fruit means you are getting “whole food nutrition” – easy for your body to recognize and assimilate.
So, kick back with a fresh, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, vitamin and mineral packed green smoothie after your next run, race or training session! The taste is bound to absolutely capture you. Your body will begin to crave the rejuvenation. Unlike sport specific, recovery sports’ drinks, green smoothies dovetail perfectly into a daily nutritional and health compliment, with the benefits extending beyond the realm of endurance isolated goals. Enjoy!
